Flexible Display Development Status and Market Exploration 2012
A flexible display with features such as lightweight, slim, and robust, and the possibility of further cost reduction has emerged.
Flexible displays have the potential to be manufactured at a lower cost than traditional glass-based displays. This is especially true for the backplane, where the potential for cost reduction is very high. The flexibleization (filmization) of the backplane has already begun mass production using a lift-off method with polyimide varnish, and further development is progressing. This manufacturing technology is expected to lead to lower costs. Polyimide varnish is significantly cheaper as a material cost compared to glass substrates. In terms of the manufacturing process, recent conventional displays for smartphones have implemented chemical etching and other methods to achieve thinner designs, which have contributed to increased costs. Although the lift-off method involves additional processes such as coating, curing, and releasing polyimide varnish, it is expected to be comparatively lower in cost. At least on the backplane side, the flexibleization (filmization) is likely to see significant advancements in cost reduction.
